Recording greenhouse gas emissions of all the offices and plants in China
Bayer China Launches “Country Carbon Footprint” Project, Pioneering CO2 Emissions Control in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry
Beijing, June 5, 2009 – In conjunction with the “World Environment Day”, Bayer China launched its nation-wide “Country Carbon Footprint” program recently, recording and auditing all the Carbon emissions produced during the production and business activities, covering all key production units and their energy supply , legal entity’s office buildings, business cars, business travels, logistics and so on, making Bayer pioneering multinational in its kind who records the carbon emissions of all production and business aspects in China.
“By choosing China as the 1st country to implement such a program within the Global Bayer group, it highlights Bayer’s dedication and commitment to provide most advanced technology to enable China combating climate change”, said Mr. Michael Koenig, President of Bayer Greater China. The program has already rolled out in some production sites and office buildings. The whole program is expected to be concluded by the end of 2010.
“Country Carbon Footprint” program is aiming at generating an explicit carbon map of Bayer China and serves as a reference for setting up precise carbon emission reduction target of Bayer group China in a long run. It contributes to the Group’s comprehensive Bayer Climate Program launched at the end of 2007.
The attribute of Bayer’s “Country Carbon Footprint” is to strive to combine group’s economic interest, ecological and social perspectives through innovations by using a scientific mechanism of analyzing and recording towards the carbon emissions. The program itself is designed to have a sustainable impact. As one of the Bayer Climate Program’s light house projects, the ”Bayer Climate Check” by Bayer Technology Services provides the technical backbone to “Country Carbon Footprint”. Bayer Climate Check consists of two related but relatively independent technological systems: Climate Footprint and Energy Efficiency Check. In 2007, Bayer Climate Check obtained the technical certification from TÜV, a well-known international environment auditing organization. The innovative aspect of it is that it also includes the upstream stages of production in the assessment, namely raw materials, energy and logistics. The Bayer Climate Check thus provides decision-makers for the first time with a further ecological criterion for designing production processes in addition to the conventional profitability calculation.
Meantime, Bayer China also launched the “Green Office Campaign” recently, encouraging employees to recycle and reuse papers, batteries, stationeries, also reduce the electricity and water consumption. It’s in line with Bayer group’s initiatives in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Its ultimate goal is to arouse the awareness of the energy efficiency and emission control among all the employees and help them to apply these concepts and take actions in their daily work to create a more environmental friendly and energy efficient working environment.
Bayer sticks on its sustainable development concept and commitments, conveying them into actions. For the period between 2005 and 2020, Bayer has set new and ambitious emission targets, particularly in view of the achievements it has already made in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The Bayer MaterialScience subgroup wants to reduce its specific greenhouse gas emissions per ton of sales product by 25 percent globally. Bayer CropScience is targeting a reduction of 15 percent in its absolute global emissions, and Bayer HealthCare of 5 percent. Furthermore, Bayer initiated “EcoFleet” Initiative to cut worldwide CO2 emissions of the cars used by the company and their employees by 20% by 2012, new car policy creates incentive for eco-friendly company cars. Bayer also set up the foundation to fund “Bayer Climate Award” and “Bayer Climate Fellows”, which are dedicated to scientist respectively schoolchildren who have remarkable contribution to the climate change program.
China is also an active participant in the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy program, an initiative Bayer conducts in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Bayer China also endows the Bayer Environmental Award for Media.
