Bayer’s stock has been included in the FTSE4Good indices continuously since their establishment in 2001. This index series is managed by a joint venture of the London Stock Exchange and the Financial Times newspaper. Bayer is included in both the FTSE4Good Europe Index and the FTSE4Good Global Index. The FTSE4Good index series is based on a number of FTSE share indices. It ranks companies that meet specific social and ecological criteria in areas such as environmental and climate protection, social benefits for employees, human rights and action to prevent corruption. Companies are assessed by the London-based rating agency Ethical Investment Research Services (EIRIS).
Climate protection plays a key role in sustainability management at Bayer. The Group’s extensive Climate Program has now been honored by the European Risk Management Award 2009 in the category Best Environmental Initiative. “We are working on various solutions to foster effective climate protection and help mitigate the consequences of climate change,” said Plischke. This convinced the jury for the European Risk Management Award, which singles out companies that integrate the challenges posed by climate change into their business strategies and risk management by implementing solutions geared to placing their operations on a sustainable basis.
Bayer’s Climate Program comprises a range of “lighthouse” projects. Examples of projects to reduce greenhouse gases are the EcoCommerical Building, a concept for zero-emission buildings for the corporate sector and other organizations that can be implemented in all climate zones, and the Bayer Climate Check which identifies potential to reduce emissions in industrial production. To deal with the repercussions of climate change such as rising temperatures and increasing droughts, research projects are dedicated to improving the stress resistance of plants. Also with the aid of biotechnology, plants can be made more resistant to such factors, thus safeguarding crop yields.
Since 2004 the European Risk Management Award has been annually awarded by the magazine “StrategicRISK” in various categories to companies and public-sector organizations. The panel of judges comprises representatives from the worlds of science, business and politics.
