Following an editorial by the Chairman of the Board of Management Werner Wenning, the first three sections are devoted to how climate is created, what causes climate change and what the international political community is doing about it. One section each then features the integrated approach of the Bayer Climate Program and the first so-called “lighthouse projects”. One of these is the “EcoCommercial Building”, a concept for zero-emission commercial buildings that can be applied in the different climate zones of the Earth. With a research collaboration focusing on the jatropha plant, Bayer is pursuing an approach to the sustainable use of plants for generating biofuels: itself inedible, jatropha grows on arid soil that is unsuitable for planting food crops. Bayer is also working on the development of stress-resistant plants that can withstand heat, drought, cold and saline soil – factors that climate change threatens to increase.
The Bayer Climate Check is a new tool from Bayer designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in industrial production. This measurement and control tool, which has been certified by the German inspection agency TÜV, also includes raw materials, logistics and energy in its analysis and identifies potential ways of cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
A photo section featuring children from all over the world completes the brochure. As part of an international painting competition that Bayer organized in collaboration with UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme, children have expressed urgent messages on the subject of climate change through their artwork. Postcards showing some of the award-winning motifs are enclosed with the brochure.
